Enoch / Idrīs

חֲנוֹךְ (Hebrew) · إدريس (Arabic)

Patriarch who walked with God and was taken up

Overview

Both traditions describe a righteous figure who was elevated without death. The Torah’s Enoch is the seventh patriarch who “walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him” (Gen 5:24). The Quran’s Idrīs is a prophet raised to a high station: “We raised him to a high place” (Surah 19:57). Islamic tradition identifies Idrīs with Enoch and sometimes with Hermes Trismegistus.
