Prophet of fire who was taken up to heaven

Overview

Elijah is the great prophet of fire and judgment in the Torah, challenging Baal worship and ascending to heaven in a chariot of fire (2 Kgs 2:11). The Quran’s Ilyās is a prophet sent to the people of Baal: “And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers” (Surah 37:123). Both traditions honor him as a champion of monotheism against idolatry.
